Kinja'd!!!

DaveDave reminded me that a while ago I started compiling a list of information on a couple of engines I was looking to swap into my Spitfire. As my work at the time was fairly tedious, that little spreadsheet grew and grew and grew until by now it covers nearly 1200 different engines. Thought it might interest some people to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :)

Some info to help people navigate the mass of data:

The engines are arranged by manufacturer, then cylinder count, then age.

All power figures are in net bhp. Where only gross figures are available I haven’t included them, and any modified figures are from pictures of dyno readouts (sometimes with an admittedly crude calculation to convert whp to flywheel).

All weights are fully dressed. Where I can’t find a reliable source of the fully dressed weight I haven’t included it. Some of the weights are calculated from the weight of a base engine + the additional weight of whichever turbo they use.

Max rpm is typically the redline, but where I’ve found info of people consistently saying ‘you can take it up to x rpm no problem’ I’ve included that number.

It’s probably missing quite a few engines that have come out in the past 5 years or so, but hell it’s got ZIL V8s so swi ng s and roundabouts ;)

Hope people find it interesting! My intention is that it’s a good little resource to use for potential engine swaps, and also for reliably gauging the weight of engines as I’ve already waded through the thousands of thread rants of people saying LS’ weigh nothing to find the one person who actu ally stuck his on a scale and posted the picture.

Oh, and if anyone’s got any other information that I can add and make it better please let me know! I’m particularly interested in the weight of engines fully dressed if people have any lying around in garages, and various dimensions to help people gauge whether something will fit or not :)

Happy scrolling!

Scrolls down, looking for Trabant.

Leaves disappointed.

Assuming the 1500 B series BMC is roughly the same as the 1800, swapping to the B6ZE has saved about 30KG. You wouldn’t guess that  from looking at them!

Yep :) it’s surprising how heavy some of these old lumps of iron are. A lot less volume, but quite a bit of weight!

Good to hear from you! I was wondering not too long ago how the spit was doing.

Indeed ;) been too busy trying to fix the damn Fiat to post much ;) it’s still stubbornly refusing to run properly, but I’ve discovered a new engine sensor I didn’t know about that can cause the sort of problems it’s got. As soon as it’s done I shall post triumphantly!

And yes, that’s one of my favourites ;)

I’ll see if I can find some info on some tuned XU10s too ;)

That’s part of the reason I haven’t been posting recently. Not much to post about!

I’ve tried painting the Spit a couple of times but it’s a bit of a steep learni ng curve. Think I’ve got it all worked out now, but at the moment it’s just sanding off all the rubbish paint so I can start afresh.

Even the Fiat’s fighting back. Still trying to get it running properly, but nothing I’ve done so far has fixed it. As soon as I’ve cracked it then there will probably be more to post about :)

I look forward to your posts! That Fiat has given your real trouble, apparently. And then there’s the frankenspit...

My XU10 has an intercooler from a BMW 5/730d (e39/e38), bigger and more modern (different spray pattern) injectors from a Volvo S80 and the stock exhaust with cat from a 205 gti 1.9 (less restrictive than the original I imagine). No tune. I really am curious how much power it makes. It had no problem at all keeping up with Rico’s V8 Lincoln though.

Yeah it would definitely be interesting to see what yours makes. There’s every reason it should be a bit more powerful than stock :) if you do manage to pop over to a dyno and can send me the chart I’ll happily add it to my little spreadsheet ;)

Oh, and searching for some built versions I’ve come across this: https://www.dp-engineering.nl/dyno/gallery

Lots of scrolling before you get to it, but there’s an XU10J2TE 205 GTi with 322bhp!

I notice a lack of glorious Hyundai Beta 2 on your list. You should change that. An Alpha or Beta in running order would be super cheap. They’re reliable and easy to work on, too. But, FWD, though you could probably fab up a bell housing...

G4GC engine code. Has variable valve timing and it horrendously reliable.

Hey you mad bastard, I just turned the old laptop back on and remembered Oppo. What, no updates since I last prompted you? ;)

How’s your paintjob coming along? I was starting to think about plastidipping the Camry, but if you pulled it off I might consider doing things properly.

Recently I’ve been trying to track down a starting issue. Turn the key, click/slight whirr, click etc, click etc, one more try, starts fine. There’s no starter relay separate to the starter motor that I can find. Took apart the starter motor and cleaned everything. Still does it. There’s a clutch switch and neutral switch in the wiring diagram for the starter circuit, but clutching and gear-stick-neutralling have no effect . The (keyed) ignition switch is the last place I’d normally look, but at this point... I’m about to find out spraying a bit of contact cleaner on it would have fixed it at the start, right?

BTW, my dad bought a swage dimpler from IKEA yesterday for fitting a tap to a sink . Couldn’t think why I knew the name for what it was doing. Couldn’t work out why I was reminded to go on Oppo, either. Now it all makes sense.

Now isn’t that a cracking greeting ;)

Haha similar thing with me (just switched it on and flicked through!). Loads happened, but not a great deal on the Spit I’m afraid. Still trying to get the paint right (definitely a steep learning curve, would think plastidipping would be a hell of a lot easier) , but been doing tons of work on the Fiat to get it back in top shape. Seem to post a bit more on retro rides recently if you’re on there :) http://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/205746/1974-unibody-triumph-spitfire6-xj40s?page=1

Hum. Sounds like for whatever reason it’s not getting enough juice to engage the solenoid properly. Guesses would either be battery that’s deader than it’s letting on, or maybe ropey wiring between the battery and the solenoid . The Fiat had that with a piddly little wire that ran through the actual starter switch (no wonder they burn out). Fixed that by using the original switched solenoid wire to trigger a relay which took power directly from the positive post on the starter motor itself. Dead simple to do if you have a decent set of crimpers :)
